Recently, job or ‘task’ scams have appeared at an alarming rate, with scammers taking advantage of people looking for flexible, paid-at-home opportunities, especially during an economic downturn. These scams generally promise to make easy money, sometimes paid in cryptocurrency, but instead will end in monetary loss and frustration.
What is a Job or Task Scam?
Essentially, job or task scams typically start with unsolicited messages through a messaging app, like WhatsApp or Telegram, offering work-from-home positions with no experience necessary. Generally, the job involves tasks with commissions or daily salary paid in cryptocurrency, which is unregulated and rarely used by genuine employers.
Usually, scammers will impersonate a legitimate company first, providing links to cloned websites imitating real businesses. The scammer starts the victim with what appears to be a legitimate portal, allowing the user to engage in completing tasks while watching their “account balance” increase. The balance displayed to the user is not real, but it gives the image of actual progress.
Eventually, the victim is told that one of the tasks caused their account to go negative. They must deposit more money, usually in crypto, to continue earning. Occasionally they might be given small, initial returns to build trust. Over time, the “tasks” get more expensive, and the scammer may push the victim to borrow money or take out a loan to complete the task set. The scammer’s line will be that once the set is completed withdrawals will be possible. In actuality, no money will be returned. More excuses will happen- tax/processing fees- and then total radio silence.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never trust job offers that come through unsolicited messages.
- Always verify URLs, especially watch for small changes in spelling or structure.
- Be cautious of any job that requires you to make a deposit, especially in cryptocurrency.
- If it seems too good to be true, trust your instincts, it probably is.
